NOTE: the google maps show Waldroup Road slightly wrong, & Mason Rd should not be on there twice, nor Ladyslipper. Waldroup Rd is actually where the southern Mason Rd is shown.  Where they show it is where the farm drive is that our shop is located on so it would still get you close enough.   I will be putting up a link to a map that shows our house and shop location in Brasstown so people can arrive at either.

DRIVING LOCATION

We are in the pointy end of Western NC, exactly in between Asheville NC (I40) & Chattanooga TN (I75) - 100miles or 2hrs each way. If travelling on I-75 Brasstown is about 1.5hrs off I-75 to the east, exiting at Cleveland, TN, a bit north of Chattanooga.

AIRPORTS

We are in the middle of a 4-airport diamond:

North: Knoxville (TYS) 100 miles

South: Atlanta (ATL) 135 miles

East:    Asheville (AVL) 110 miles

West: Chattanooga (CHA) 100 miles

I have found Atlanta to be the best served airport to fly in and out of - its about 2-1/2 hr drive compared to 2hrs from Chattanooga but you are more likely to find a direct flight so it makes up for it.

Equal second are Chattanooga or Asheville. Knoxville is less of a straight shot to Brasstown.

There is also the Greenville SC (GSP) airport 140 miles south-east but that is a less straightforward road journey up to us.

If it works out that a few folks are coming in to one aiport on the same day I can do a pick up.

DURATION

As previous years we will base it around a weekend, this year June 7th & 8th with a couple of days either side to accommodate travel so will be approximately a Thurs-Mon event. Please let us know before the ‘dig when you are likely to arrive.

ACTIVITIES

Our shop is set up for two blacksmiths - we have a 35'x80' shop with 2 coal/charcoal forges, 2 gas forges, 2 power hammers, 3 anvils, fly press, 2 drill presses, mig/tig welder, arc welder, 6x10 steel layout table and the usual collection of hand tools.  I also have a separate jewelry space which is just framed in to date so my bench and equipment is set up in the middle of the space - that may or may not have improved by the time next year rolls around. There is a 24x35 space between jewelry and blacksmith shop which is mostly unused right now and could be set up as a cold working area.

ACCOMMODATIONS & MEALS

Our house and shop are about 2miles apart so unless its a real small group of folks we will do breakfast and dinner at our house and lunch at the shop.  Anyone who wants to tent camp or bring a trailer will be in our yard, - we have 1/2 acre of level ground round the house. There is not much level ground around the shop outside of parking hence the house/shop split.

There are rental cabins in the area and also hotels in Murphy about 7 miles away.  (Google search ‘Brasstown, NC lodging’) I'm afraid I can't personally vouch for any of them.

As of March 2 ‘08 Rich is at the Days Inn, (when the Google map opens, marker ‘B’ is the correct location) would be as good a place as any for Shindig HQ hotel. For anyone who wants to stay elsewhere in the area and not camp:

The Gray Wolf Mountain Inn is a B&B, not a cabin, the index page of their website is down but rest of pages are up.

I emailed them March 3rd and inquired about the 7 days around the Shindig dates, as of March 3: “We only have 2 rooms left for the dates you've shown. They are Moose Medley and Nautica. Side by side with shared, private hall bathroom. They both have Queen beds and TV's.”

Room info & rates are here: http://www.graywolfmountaininn.com/RoomsReviews.html

The Inn is walking distance from our house but not the shop. Email: Cindy and Gil Geiger - admin@graywolfmountaininn.com

There is also Trout Cove cabins:

B.R. McCall, Manager

1629 Trout Cove Road

Brasstown, North Carolina 28902

Toll Free 888-389-3584

I cannot get their website up but they are well established and known in the area. Its 5/6 miles from the house and shop.

We look forward to seeing you all here in Brasstown!
