A spiral staircase guard railing for an existing spiral staircase. The old railing did not work at all in the beautifully remodelled home of my friends and clients. The design chosen to replace it was the most expressive and lyrical of the options I presented - it was also the most personally satisfying and challenging to me so this was an exciting project!
The design imagery is of abstracted natural forms and there is no repeat in the 12ft length around the staircase opening, the patterns flow and change. Wooden spandrels or inserts were added in to the floor at the corners afterwards by a skilled local woodworker with carvings personalized for the owners.
